William J.
Latham Sr., 70
PORTLAND - William J. Latham Sr., 70, of Portland, died at Maine Medical Center, Tuesday Dec. 20, 2005.
Born in Portland on July 10, 1935, a son of Charles F. Latham Sr. and Rita Johnson Lath- am, Bill lived his entire life in Portland or the surrounding community.
Having attended Portland schools, Bill immediately started working at Porteous Mitchell and Braun where he worked for 22 years. He went on to work for 14 years at Loring Short And Harmon, running the warehouse for a time and then managing the downtown Portland store.
There was a time when every person on Congress Street knew Bill and he had a wave or a nod for them all. He went back to work for a time owning and operating Muffins N More at One City Center in Portland until finally retiring in 1999 to spend time with his beloved pets.
People who didn't really know Bill thought he was very quiet. But those who took the time found he had a lot to say. He had a great sense of humor a very giving heart and a love of all creatures great and small.
He was a weekly bowler at the Big 20 in Scarborough, where he enjoyed the company of his fellow seniors and the exercise that it gave him. He was also a very regular visitor to the Animal Refuge League where though his heart ached at seeing the animals he took great comfort in knowing they would once again find good homes. He adopted more than one pet from there himself.
He faithfully took his dog, Lily, to the park at Fort Williams every day no matter what the weather, knowing that they were both the better for it.
He devoted the last few years to his wife, his mother-in-law Eunice H. Shryock who died Oct. 5, 2005, and his dog Lily and cat Mona.
He is greatly missed.
He was predeceased by his son William J. Latham Jr. who died on Jan. 10, 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Laurie Shryock Latham of Portland; brothers, Charles F. Latham Jr. and wife Dorothy of South Portland, Robert Latham of Cape Elizabeth and Norman Sprague of Cape Elizabeth; a daughter, Laurie Frederick and husband Kevin of Scarborough ; five grandchildren; and a niece and a nephew.
There will be no visiting hours.
Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
