Most farmers in town made charcoal for their own use but it became an industry for a few. Peter Kimbal sold charcoal through the late 1850s on Number Six Road in East Leverett. It was also produced in Leverett in pits deep within the forest on Bushy Mountain and possibly in a large depression which is located off of Route 63. In later years the industry was carried on by generations of the Howard family who continued to burn charcoal until a few years ago (1974) The Howard Kilns are still in operation but under new ownership.
